The University of Tennessee at Martin football team will get the road and make a trek across the state for the first of three consecutive matchups against programs from the Volunteer state with showdown at Conference USA foe Middle Tennessee on Saturday, Sept. 8. Kickoff from Floyd Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m. and can be seen nationally on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (0-1) enter the contest looking to snap a lengthy losing streak to FBS members with a matchup against Middle Tennessee. UT Martin is 1-25 all-time against FBS squads with its lone win coming against Memphis (20-17) in 2012. The Skyhawks have played 21 different FBS games since 2006, including a stretch from 2011-16 in which UT Martin played at least two FBS games per year. UTM is 1-20 in games against FBS opponents under the direction of head coach Jason Simpson.
In UT Martin's season opener, the Skyhawks proved to be no match for the high-scoring offense that Southeastern Conference foe Missouri featured. Heisman candidate Drew Lock proved up to the billing, completing 19 passes for 289 yards and four touchdowns in the contest. While the offense took some time to get going, the Skyhawks scored a pair of touchdowns on a one-yard rush by junior running back Jaimiee Bowe while sophomore quarterback Dresser Winn found senior LaDarius Galloway down the right sideline for a 51-yard strike. The Skyhawks would ultimately drop the season-opener by a final score of 51-17.
Defensively, the Skyhawks were led by Murfreesboro native Kevin Prather, Jr. who posted nine tackles – including seven solos – while notching a pair of tackles for loss. Preseason All-OVC linebacker James Gilleylen also joined in the action with eight tackles while producing a game-high three tackles for loss.
As a whole, 20 different players made their Skyhawk debut in the contest against Missouri. Senior Nick Allen received the first game reps of his career while starting at left tackle while JUCO transfers Ben Phillips, Jr. and DaVonte Maura also earned the starting nod in their first games in a UT Martin uniform.
Middle Tennessee (0-1) enters the contest looking to also get in the win column after dropping its season opener at SEC foe Vanderbilt on Saturday by a final score of 35-7. The Blue Raiders are led by head coach Rick Stockstill who is in his 13th year at the helm. Offensively, the team features senior quarterback Brent Stockstill – the son of head coach Rick Stockstill – to combine for just the 89th father-son pair in FBS history. In his fifth season, Brent Stockstill has completed 753-of-1182 attempts for 9,129 yards and 78 touchdowns.
Saturday's contest will mark the 31st meeting between the two programs in series history with Middle Tennessee holding a 21-8-1 advantage. The Skyhawks and Blue Raiders haven't met since 1999 in a long-standing series history which dates back to 1931. UT Martin's last victory at Middle Tennessee was on Sept. 15, 1979, a game in which the then "Pacers" came out on top 28-17.
The game will be televised live on ESPN+. Fans can also tune into WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM to hear Tom Britt (play-by-play), Chris Brinkley (color) and John Abel (sideline) provide analysis. WUTM, UT Martin's award-winning student radio station, will also broadcast the game on 90.3 FM.
