WACO, Texas – Facing its second straight nationally ranked opponent to begin the season, the University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian squad won three MOP's today before falling by a slim 8-7 margin to No. 8 Fresno State.
The Skyhawks managed a 3-1 advantage in equitation on the flat and split the four points in equitation over fences. UT Martin accounted for one win and a tie in reining while adding one victory in horsemanship. Abbie Hopkins (equitation on the flat), Kelby Kane (equitation over fences) and Noel Meadows (reining) each tallied MOP accolades for the Skyhawks today.
In equitation on the flat, Hopkins put together a dominant MOP performance as her 74 points were 13 points more than her Fresno State competitor. Kane also won by a wide margin (69-62) while Monika Zoromski accounted for a 66-60 triumph in the event.
Kane continued her strong day with an MOP victory in equitation over fences, dialing up 79 points. Zoromski also won her second head-to-head matchup of the day with a 74-point effort. Hopkins (70) and Lindsay Anderson (66) also performed well but fell by three and two points, respectively.
Meadows' 66.5-point performance was good enough for reining MOP honors, winning her second consecutive decision to start her sophomore campaign. Hannah McDonald generated a draw in her matchup as her 61 points equaled the performance of Fresno State's Shea Gilson. Maddie Mykolaitis ran into some tough luck in the event, as her 68 points were just 0.5 points away from a tie.
UT Martin was paced by Lucy Eier's victory in horsemanship, as the sophomore dialed up 71.5 points. However, the Skyhawks suffered a trio of close defeats as McAuley Ross (74), Bobbie Piddock (72) and Devon Woods (71) each battled but fell by three points or less.
The second of three competitions in the Willis Invitational will conclude on Saturday, Sept. 29 as UT Martin takes on No. 7 Baylor before squaring off against Delaware State.
