NO. 10 UT MARTIN EQUESTRIAN BATTLES BUT FALLS TO NO. 1 AUBURN IN SEASON OPENER

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian team posted solid scores across the board today but the No. 1 ranked Auburn Tigers proved to be too much for the No. 10 Skyhawks in a 15-4 setback at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion.

Auburn claimed a 4-1 advantage in each Hunt Seat event, narrowly edging the Skyhawks in total points in equitation over fences (382-373) and in equitation on the flat (406-369). The defending national champion Tigers also posted a 3-1 advantage in horsemanship (368-358.5) and took four out of five wins in reining (341-329.5).

In equitation over fences, UT Martin sophomore Brooke Pfeiffer earned a head-to-head victory over Taylor St. Jacques, piling up 84 points. Kelby Kane (84 points) was narrowly defeated by Auburn MOP Caitlin Boyle while Randi LaChance (72), Monika Zoromski (68) and Abbie Hopkins (65) also represented the Skyhawks in the event.

Lucy Eier accounted for a victory in horsemanship, as her 74 points bested Haley Pembroke of Auburn. McAuley Ross earned a tie against Kara Kaufmann with a score of 73.5 points in her collegiate debut for UT Martin. Although they did not come away with wins, Devon Woods and Tess Baumann each tallied 70.5 points while Bailey Newlin had 70 points for the Skyhawks.

UT Martin sophomore Noel Meadows came away with a victory with a 67-point performance in reining. Hannah McDonald (68.5) and Liana Nowak (66) were both narrowly defeated by one point each while Emily Zegiestowsky and Sammi Felts were responsible for 66.5 points and 61.5 points, respectively.

Hopkins topped Boyle in her equitation on the flat head-to-head matchup, as she was awarded 85 points. Zoromski (76), Kane (75), LaChance (67) and Quinn Reed (66) were also part of the Skyhawk lineup in the event.

UT Martin returns to the arena on Sept. 28-29 when it travels to Waco, Texas for the Willis Invitational. The Skyhawks are one of four teams in the event, joining host Baylor, Delaware State and Fresno State.
