EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Tennessee at Martin cross country squads returned to competition and did so in a big way at the Stegemoller Classic National Preview on Friday evening at Angel Mounds in Evansville, Ind.
Highlighting the evening was the strong pace of junior Ryan Ford who notched an individual title on the men's side while the Skyhawk women produced a dominating performance to clinch a team victory.
In the men's 7k, Ford was strong from the start all the way until he crossed the finish line first overall to notch an individual title at the Stegemoller Classic with a time of 21:33.3 – edging out the next runner by nearly 10 seconds. Newcomer Oisin O'Gailin notched yet another strong finish in his second meet as he finished third overall. Meanwhile, the trio of Lenny Baumann, Tim Dye and Daniel Smith rounded out the scoring five for the Skyhawks. Despite the strong showing, the men narrowly missed the team victory as they were edged out by Southern Indiana on their home course.

In the women's 5k, the Skyhawks would notch their first victory of the season by a sizable margin with a total of 22 points. Newcomer Alexis Grandys paced the Skyhawks for the second consecutive meet with a second place finish to start off a string Skyhawks to cross the line. Freshman Breanna Alderton finished her first race as a Skyhawk in 3rd while the duo of Breanna Roy and Lydia Lee rounded out a phenomenal pack to finish 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th overall. With an eighth place finish by Summer Pierson, the Skyhawks secured a dominating team victory.

"I am proud of how these athletes performed in hot and humid conditions," UT Martin cross country coach Peter Dalton said. "It was a good win for the women along with a strong pack of men led by Ryan with an individual win."
UT Martin will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 29 when traveling to Louisville, Ky. for the team's appearance at the Greater Louisville Classic.
