SKYHAWK VOLLEYBALL OPENS 2018 CAMPAIGN AT CARDINAL CLASSIC THIS WEEKEND

MARTIN, Tenn. – The 2018 University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball season officially starts this weekend as the Skyhawks travel to Louisville, Ky. for three matches in the Cardinal Classic. UT Martin takes on host Louisville (11:30 a.m.) and IUPUI (4:30 p.m.) on Friday, Aug. 24 before squaring off against Southern Illinois at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25.

The Skyhawks begin their fourth season under head coach Jaclynn Wilson boasting seven returners and four starters. Friday's season opener will be the first time in program history that UT Martin and Louisville meet on the volleyball court. The Skyhawks last played IUPUI in 2007 and Southern Illinois in 2015.
In the team's home exhibition against North Alabama last Saturday, UT Martin was led offensively by newcomer Gintare Mackeviciute's match-high 15 kills. Hannah Phillips collected 13 kills on a .250 attack percentage while Kenzie Hinshaw (21 assists) and Maddi Noble (20 assists) each split setter duties. Brooke Gyori equaled a match-high with 16 digs while Megan Fair (10 digs) and Justine Walker (match-best six blocks) also set the tone for the Skyhawks defensively.

Louisville is coming off a 24-7 record and an Atlantic Coast Conference championship in 2017. Second-year head coach Dani Busboom Kelly oversees a Cardinals roster that includes four All-ACC honorees from a year ago, including two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year Molly Sauer (4.13 digs per set in 2017) and ACC Setter of the Year Wilma Rivera (10.66 assists per set last fall).

Head coach Steve Payne is in his 22nd season at the helm of the IUPUI volleyball program, who finished second in the Horizon League and participated in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship in 2017. All-Horizon League middle blocker Haley Hoffman looks to pace the Jaguars after posting a team-best .294 attack percentage to go along with 128 blocks (1.09 per set) last year.

Southern Illinois registered a 6-23 overall record last season. A total of 10 Salukis return for second-year head coach Kari Thompson this fall, including 2017 All-Missouri Valley Conference honoree Patience Brown. The senior middle blocker led the team with 0.85 blocks per set last season while also chipping in 2.09 kills per set on a .292 hitting percentage.
