BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The Ohio Valley Conference released its first update of the 2018-19 Commissioner's Cup standings today and the University of Tennessee at Martin ranks fourth out of 12 schools after the fall championship season.
The Skyhawks have compiled 36.5 points so far in 2018-19, which trails only Eastern Kentucky (45), Murray State (42) and Southeast Missouri (39.5). UT Martin follows in fourth place while Eastern Illinois (36), Morehead State (32.5), Belmont (31.5), Austin Peay (27.5), Jacksonville State (27), Tennessee Tech (27), SIUE (25) and Tennessee State (15.5) rounded out the field.
So far in 2018-19, UT Martin's soccer team has claimed 12 points while both the men's and women's cross country squads notched seven points apiece. The Skyhawk volleyball team also claimed 5.5 points while the football squad earned five points.
Implemented in 2008-09, the OVC Commissioner's Cup is a symbol of overall athletic excellence in Conference-sponsored championships and is awarded annually to one member institution. Schools are required to count point totals for four main sports (football, volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball) along with their next eight highest point totals from the remaining sports, regardless of gender.
For all sports (except rifle, men's indoor and men's outdoor track – which do not have eight participating teams), the first place team earns 12 points, the second place team earns 11 points, etc. For rifle, men's indoor and men's outdoor track and field, the first place team earns 12 points and each subsequent place earns points less than the total number of teams in the OVC divided by the number of teams that sponsor that sport.
UT Martin's highest finish in the OVC Commissioner Cup standings came in 2011-12, when the Skyhawks placed seventh out of 11 schools. UT Martin's most points in a single academic year came in 2016-17 as the Skyhawks compiled 89 points.
