MARTIN, Tenn. – The upcoming University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball game against Brescia on Saturday, Dec. 15 will be branded as a "Stuttering Awareness Game", Skyhawk head coach Anthony Stewart announced today.
During Saturday's game, each member of the UT Martin coaching staff will don a lapel pin that was graciously donated by the National Stuttering Association (NSA). The NSA logo will also be displayed on each edition of the gameday programs that will be distributed to fans in attendance.
"This has been a vision of mine for a while now," said Stewart, who is in his third season as head coach of the Skyhawk men's basketball program. "Stuttering awareness is something that I am passionate about – it affects millions of people on a daily basis and I wanted to bring awareness to those who deal with that. We have been working with the NSA behind the scenes over the last two months and we are glad to host a 'Stuttering Awareness Game' here at UT Martin."
Tammy Flores, executive director of the NSA, was excited to be a part of this joint venture with the Skyhawk basketball program.
"We are honored to be represented in this way and appreciate the opportunity to increase awareness of stuttering," Flores said. "Our mission is to let people who stutter know they are not alone and this is a great way to do that."
Founded in 1977, the NSA is the largest non-profit organization in the world dedicated to bringing hope and empowerment to children and adults who stutter, their families, and professionals, through support, education, advocacy and research. Saturday's tipoff at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
