MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin officially tips off its 68th season of men's basketball when the Skyhawks host in-state NAIA opponent Cumberland at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center on Tuesday, Nov. 6. The game, which is the backend of a women's and men's doubleheader, will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m.
This marks the first time since the 2010-11 season that UT Martin has opened its season with a home contest. Since joining the Division I ranks in 1992, the Skyhawks are a perfect 5-0 in season openers played in the Elam Center.
Head coach Anthony Stewart brings back six players from last season and welcomes in seven newcomers to the 2018-19 roster. Redshirt senior forward Fatodd Lewis (12.4 points, 7.3 rebounds per game) headlines the Skyhawk returners, as he was selected to the Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference team by the league's head coaches and sports information directors.
Delfincko Bogan (OVC-best 58 steals, team-high 3.0 assists per game), Jailen Gill (OVC leader with a .662 field goal percentage in league play, team-best 29 blocks) and Parrish Hewitt (four games of at least 15 points as a true freshman) round out UT Martin's returners who saw action in 2017-18.
The Skyhawks had one exhibition tuneup, dispatching St. Louis College of Pharmacy by a 113-47 margin last Thursday. Colorado State transfer Kevin Little (game-highs of 27 points and seven assists) and junior college All-American Quintin Dove (17 points, 17 rebounds) led the way for UT Martin, who placed seven scorers in double figures.
Located in Lebanon, Cumberland is undefeated on the season with each of its four victories coming by double-digits. The Phoenix offense has shot 52.1 percent (113-of-217) on the year. Playing without its leading scorer on Monday night, Cumberland won 75-65 over Philander Smith behind Shamari Denson (game-high 17 points in his first start of the season) and Ty Sean Powell (16 points, 15 rebounds).
