
JAMES GILLEYLEN NAMED TSWA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – University of Tennessee at Martin senior linebacker James Gilleylen added another accolade to his decorated career after being named Tennessee Sports Writers Association Defensive Player of the Week after a strong performance against Tennessee State.
A native of Tupelo, Miss., Gilleylen tallied a game-high 11 tackles against Tennessee State while notching 3.5 tackles for loss and a sack. Arguably his biggest tackle of the game came late in the fourth quarter. With TSU looking at third and four, Gilleylen tallied a six-yard tackle for loss which forced the Tigers to punt the ball and give UT Martin the ball back with 46 seconds to play. The tackle directly set up a scoring drive as UT Martin scored a touchdown with 10 seconds remaining to force overtime.
Gilleylen recently wrapped up his season with a team-high 89 tackles while notching 13.0 tackles for loss totaling 55 yards – including 2.5 sacks. He ranked seventh in the OVC in total tackles while ranking fourth in tackles for loss. He would finish the season on an impressive note with 40 tackles split over the final three games of the season for an average of 13.3 per game down the stretch. With his strong campaign, Gilleylen leaves UT Martin ranked ninth on the program's career tackles list with 297 stops.
