MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian team displayed some remarkable individual performances today as the Skyhawks narrowly fell by an 11-8 margin to No. 5 South Carolina at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion.
Tess Baumann dominated the Western portion of the competition, collecting MOP accolades in both horsemanship (75 points) and reining (72.5 points). Freshman Kelby Kane gave UT Martin its third MOP recipient after she nabbed top honors with a 73-point score in equitation on the flat.
All in all, the Skyhawks were within striking distance of the No. 5 ranked Gamecocks in raw score (1288.5 to 1258). UT Martin was awarded five of the nine points in the Western discipline while South Carolina held a 7-3 edge in the Hunter Seat discipline.
Baumann's performance set the tone for the Skyhawks to take three out of the five points in horsemanship. Lucy Eier (71.5 points) and Bailey Newlin (70) also collected points while Devon Woods (0.5-point loss) and McAuley Ross (one-point loss) nearly gave UT Martin a sweep in the event.
The two teams split the reining event as Baumann once again stood out for the Skyhawks. Sammi Felts earned a win with a score of 68.5 points while Hannah McDonald's 63 points were good enough for a draw with her Gamecock competitor.
Kane starred in equitation on the flat, garnering a score that was four points better than any rider. Quinn Reed also came away with a win for UT Martin after tallying 64 points while Abbie Hopkins was narrowly edged by one point in her head-to-head matchup.
In equitation over fences, Kane notched another individual win with 75 points, capping off a memorable day for the Lexington, Ky. native. Hopkins and Lindsay Anderson also accounted for notable performances with 82 and 80 points, respectively, but were bested by their South Carolina counterparts.
The Skyhawks close out their 2018 fall season on Friday, Nov. 16 when they travel to Dover, Del. to take on Delaware State and SMU.
