SKYHAWK VOLLEYBALL TRIES TO EXTEND HOME WINNING STREAK THIS WEEKEND; SENIOR DAY SET FOR SATURDAY

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team puts a three-match home winning streak on the line this weekend in a pair of Ohio Valley Conference matchups as the Skyhawks host Eastern Illinois at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2 and SIUE at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3.

Saturday's match will serve as Senior Day for UT Martin as Megan Fair and Brooke Gyori will each be honored in a pregame ceremony. Fair currently leads the Skyhawks with 2.52 kills per set, 833 attempts and 2.89 points per set while also ranking second on the team with 2.68 digs per set. Gyori has cemented her status as one of the top defensive players in the OVC, as she ranks second in the league with 5.04 digs per set – securing double-digit scoops in all 26 matches this season.

UT Martin (12-14, 5-7 OVC) has not lost in front of its home crowd in nearly a month, winning three consecutive matches since an Oct. 5 setback to Jacksonville State. The Skyhawks have taken nine of the 13 sets while maintaining a 26-11 edge in service aces over that span. Fair and Hannah Phillips have led the way with 33 kills apiece while Gyori has shored up the defense with 65 digs (5.00 per set) during the recent home surge.

On the season, UT Martin ranks atop the OVC with 148 service aces – downing 1.42 per set. In addition to Gyori, Kenzie Hinshaw (fifth with 0.35 service aces per set, ninth with 7.79 assists per set) and Gintare Mackeviciute (seventh with a .272 attack percentage) each rank in the top-10 in OVC statistical categories. In league play, Mackeviciute leads the league with 1.20 blocks per set while Justine Walker (third with 1.06 blocks per set) and Phillips (eighth with a .283 hitting percentage) also find themselves in the top-10 in the league in their respective categories.

The Skyhawks will be going for their first season sweep over Eastern Illinois since 2012 as UT Martin defeated the Panthers in four sets (26-24, 25-12, 24-26, 25-19) on Sept. 29 in Charleston. In that match, Jamie Rys slammed down a career-best 17 kills while Gyori (27) and Fair (26) combined for over half of UT Martin's 93 digs. Hinshaw also generated a double-double of 52 assists and 14 digs while directing an offense that hit .215.

Eastern Illinois (9-18, 4-8 OVC) dropped a pair of OVC decisions last weekend, falling 3-2 at SIUE on Wednesday before a 3-1 home setback against Belmont on Saturday. Despite the losses, senior Taylor Smith stood out for a pair of triple-doubles, averaging 2.56 kills, 4.22 assists and 3.78 digs per set. Anne Hughes leads the OVC with her 5.26 digs per set average while Laurel Bailey ranks in the top-10 in the league in service aces (0.27 per set, ninth) kills (3.02 per set, 10th) and points (3.48 per set, 10th).

Winners of four straight matches is SIUE (8-16, 7-5 OVC), who defeated the Skyhawks by a 22-25, 32-30, 25-15, 25-18 margin back on Sept. 28 in Edwardsville. Redshirt freshman Hope Everett captured her second straight adidas OVC Newcomer of the Week accolade after averaging 3.78 kills per set on a .391 attack percentage in home victories over Eastern Illinois and Tennessee Tech. Rachel McDonald also averaged 4.78 kills per set last week for the Cougars, including an OVC-best 30-kill performance against Eastern Illinois. SIUE leads the OVC in kills (14.11 per set), assists (13.43 per set) and digs (19.09 per set) in conference play.
