MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin cross country squads will look to trust its training and progression at the Ohio Valley Conference Cross Country Championship which will be contested on Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Osage Centre in Cape Girardeau, Mo. The women's 5k race will begin at 9 a.m. with the men's 8k following at 10 a.m.
It marks the first time in which Southeast Missouri has hosted the event since 2008. This will be the 58th OVC men's championship – dating back to 1962 – while marking the 40th women's championship. The meet is free and open to the public.
The Skyhawk men enter the OVC Championships surging as of late to garner a South Regional ranking on four separate occasions during the season. Entering the Championships sitting 15th in the South Region, the Skyhawks are one of five conference programs ranked as of late joining Eastern Kentucky (No. 2, Southeast), Belmont (No. 3, South), Tennessee Tech (Nov. 5, South) and Eastern Illinois (No. 14, Midwest). The team's best-ever OVC finish was fifth in 2011 and 2017.
UT Martin is led by standout junior Ryan Ford who will carry the heavy lifting in his third Championship appearance. Ford has paced the Skyhawks in every meet this season while notching a season-best time 8k time of 24:30.8 at the Louisville Classic. Oisin O'Gailin has ran closely behind Ford in every meet in his debut season for the Skyhawks as he is finding his feet during the championship season. The squad will look to Daniel Smith, Marcos Macias, Lenny Baumann and Tim Dye to round out the scoring five for the Skyhawks.
On the women's side, UT Martin will attempt to prove that the squad's preseason regional ranking was no fluke. Ranking as high as 15th in the South Region, the Skyhawks have finished fifth at the Championship the past two seasons.
The Skyhawks have been paced by the freshman duo of Breanna Alderton and Breanna Roy for much of the season. In their first collegiate campaign, the pair have ranked amongst the Skyhawks top runners in every meet. Alderton's best 5k time of 18:20.4 was recorded at the Louisville Classic while Roy posted a time of 18:33.6. With a freshman led group, the future is bright for the Skyhawks.
