The University of Tennessee at Martin football team will look to get back to its winning ways with a matchup at Ohio Valley Conference rival Eastern Illinois on Saturday, Oct. 20. Kickoff from O'Brien Field is scheduled for 2 p.m. and is billed as the OVC ESPN3 Game of the Week.
The game serves as a matchup of two of the best OVC programs in recent history. Since 2008, UT Martin and Eastern Illinois have both tallied 62 victories to rank third in league victories during the span. The contest also serves as the 24th meeting between the two programs since 1995 with the Panthers holding a 14-9 series advantage. Despite trailing in the overall series, the Skyhawks have won six of the last eight matchups against the Panthers while winning three straight at O'Brien Field.
The Skyhawks (1-5, 1-2 OVC) enter the game hoping to reverse a trend which has seen the squad drop back-to-back single-digit losses to Murray State (45-38) and Eastern Kentucky (35-34). In the team's most recent contest, UT Martin scored 24 unanswered points in the second quarter but would be limited to just three points in the second half, ultimately falling by just one point. In the contest, senior running back LaDarius Galloway tallied his second career multi-touchdown performance with touchdowns of 23 and six yards, respectively.
Sophomore Dresser Winn leads the team's offense at the quarterback position, completing 147-of-227 passes for 1,553 yards and 12 touchdowns while the running back duo of LaDarius Galloway and Jaimiee Bowe have combined for 506 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. Junior Terry Williams leads the receiving core with 48 receptions for 506 yards and three touchdowns while ranking sixth nationally with eight receptions per game. Kevin Prather Jr. paces the defensive unit with 44 tackles and 9.5 tackles for loss.
Eastern Illinois (1-6, 1-3 OVC) has also dropped back-to-back league matchups heading into the contest, including a 49-22 decision against No. 7 Jacksonville State last weekend. Despite the team's record, the Panthers rank second in the OVC in total offense, averaging 469.6 yards per game – including a passing offense which leads the league at 343.3 yards per game. The Panthers have used a pair of quarterbacks in Johnathan Brantley and Harry Woodberry who have combined to complete 64.6 percent of their passes for 2,403 yards and 21 touchdowns while tossing just three interceptions. The team's top target comes in the form of Alexander Hollins with 62 receptions for 814 yards and 12 touchdowns.
UT Martin is led by 13th-year head coach Jason Simpson who enters the contest boasting a 79-64 mark overall – ranking seventh in OVC history. Eastern Illinois head coach Kim Dameron has posted a 25-28 mark in his fifth season at the helm of the Panthers.
The game will be televised live on ESPN3 as the OVC Game of the Week with Kevin Ingram (play-by-play) and Bob Belvin (color) providing analysis. Fans can also tune into WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM to hear Tom Britt (play-by-play), Chris Brinkley (color) and John Abel (sideline) on the Skyhawk Radio Network.
