MARTIN, Tenn. – University of Tennessee at Martin athletic director Kurt McGuffin has announced changes in the titles of four Skyhawk staff members who work in the athletic training and sports performance departments.
Bart Belew, who joined UT Martin as a head trainer in 2000, has received the title of assistant athletic director for sports medicine. The 1997 Skyhawk alum had previously served as the assistant athletic director for athletic training services since 2006.
Kelli Polizzi will take over as UT Martin's head athletic trainer, supervising the main athletic training room located in the Skyhawk Fieldhouse. Polizzi came to UT Martin this summer after serving as the head athletic trainer at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tenn.
"We wanted to align our positions to be more in accordance with collegiate athletic standards," McGuffin said. "Bart's leadership has been exemplary and his work ethic is second to none. With Kelli's 15 years of athletic training experience with a wide variety of sports, we felt she was more than qualified for this supervising role."
UT Martin's sports performance department has also been realigned. Chris Gillies is the new director of sports performance for Olympic sports while Nate Sedergren is the director of sports performance for football and baseball. Gillies has been with Skyhawk Athletics since 2012 while Sedergren joined UT Martin in 2015.
"It's important to have defined roles going forward," McGuffin said. "The sports performance staff continues to do a great job keeping our athletes well-conditioned and properly trained in terms of nutrition and exercise planning."
