Deonte Johnson is in his third season with the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball program and seventh season overall counting his tenure as an undergraduate. He was promoted to director of player development in June 2022.
Johnson spent last season as a graduate assistant during Ryan Ridder's first year at the helm. He had previously served as a player development coach under interim head coach Montez Robinson and additionally served as head manager as an undergraduate for parts of four seasons under former head coaches Heath Schroyer and the late Anthony Stewart.

During his Skyhawk tenure, Johnson has been an integral part of staffs who have made three postseason appearances and won a pair of Ohio Valley Conference divisional championships. He aided individual skill workouts and helped in the development of UT Martin’s four All-OVC first teamers, six All-OVC second team honorees and six All-OVC Newcomers since 2015. That list partially includes current Skyhawk guards KJ Simon (who became the first UT Martin representative to sweep All-OVC first team and OVC All-Newcomer honors since two-time All-American Lester Hudson in 2007-08) and Parker Stewart (All-OVC second team and OVC All-Newcomer in 2019-20).

A Kansas City, Mo. native, Johnson graduated from UT Martin with a degree in interdisciplinary studies in 2018. He obtained his Master's degree from UT Martin in 2022.
