MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad looks to set the longest home winning streak in its NCAA Division I Era (since 1992) when it hosts Ohio Valley Conference rival Morehead State tomorrow on ESPNU. Tipoff time is set for 3 p.m. as the second game of a noon doubleheader with the Skyhawk women's squad.
UT Martin has won 11 consecutive decisions inside the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center, equaling the mark set from Jan. 30, 2016 (last six games of the 2015-16 season) through Dec. 4, 2016 (first five outings of the 2016-17 campaign). The 11-game home winning streak is the fifth-longest in the 75-year history of Skyhawk men's basketball.
UT Martin (19-5, 11-2 OVC) is also seeking its first season sweep over the Eagles since the 2005-06 season. The Skyhawks defeated Morehead State by a 76-68 decision back on Jan. 8, overcoming a 16-point first-half deficit. Andrija Bukumirović (18 points), Afan Trnka (14), Filip Radaković (13), Matas Deniusas (10) and Pedro Santos (10) each scored in double figures for UT Martin in the road triumph over the Eagles.
The vaunted Skyhawk defense showed out again on Thursday in a 76-54 win over Southern Indiana. Santos (career-best 19 points) and Deniusas (15 points, game-high eight boards) led the way offensively as UT Martin held its third straight opponent under 55 points for the first time since Feb. 25 through March 4, 1982.
The Skyhawks are currently nestled inside the top six in the NCAA Division I ranks in scoring defense (62.63 points per game, fourth), field goal percentage defense (.379, sixth) and three-point field goal percentage defense (.275, sixth).
The Eagles (12-12, 8-5 OVC) are coming off an 82-70 setback at Southeast Missouri on Thursday, paced by Jon Carroll's team-highs of 15 points and eight rebounds. Carroll's 13 points and 13 rebounds guided Morehead State against UT Martin earlier this season while Vince Dawson III (13 points) and Tamaury Releford (12) also pitched in double-digit scoring performances.
