
Caldwell Finishes As Runner-Up As UT Martin Places Fifth In Loaded Loyola Intercollegiate Field

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Luke Caldwell carded a career-best 66 for the second straight round to help the University of Tennessee at Martin golf squad finish strong in its spring opener at the Loyola Intercollegiate.
Caldwell registered six birdies and an eagle today – including a torrid six-hole stretch (No. 9 through No. 14) where he shot 6-under par – to finish second on the 119-player leaderboard with a 203 (-13). The senior from Cookeville, Tenn. led the entire field in par-4 scoring (3.73, -8) while ranking fifth in birdies (16) and 11th in par-3 scoring (3.08, +1) en route to the best tournament finish of his collegiate career.
"Luke is picking up eight where he left off in the fall," Skyhawk head coach Austin Swafford said. "His experience and maturity is showing during his senior season. It was a really gritty effort from him this week and I'm so proud of him."
As a team, UT Martin placed fifth out of 20 teams with an overall tally of 842 (-22). That included a 281 (-7) in Round 3 – the third consecutive day where the Skyhawks posted a red score. UT Martin finished second in the event in birdies (62) and par-4 scoring (3.96, -6).
The Skyhawks' Round 3 countable scores also included Grant Phillips' 71 (five birdies), Drew Williams' 71 (four birdies) and Bryce Harmon's 73 (three birdies).
Competing as an individual, Jaden Morrell completed a great performance on the Palm Valley Golf Club with a career-best 67 (-5) that included an eagle and six birdies today. The sophomore out of Knoxville, Tenn. vaulted up 13 spots on the final leaderboard to place 17th with an aggregate score of 210 (-6) – the third-best score of the 19 players taking part as individuals in the tournament. Overall, he led the tournament with two eagles and ranked 11th in par-3 scoring with a team-best 3.08 (+1) average alongside Caldwell.
Phillips secured his third top-20 finish of the 2025-26 campaign with a 211 (-5) as the Marietta, Ga. native placed 12th in the field in par-5 scoring (team-best 4.33, -8).
Williams' third straight round of par or better resulted in a final tally of 215 (-1) with Harmon (216, E) following closely behind in the final standings. John-Gregory Wilson shot an 80 with one birdie today to finish the tournament with a 224 (+8) that included a team-high 34 pars.
"I'm really proud of how we executed where our focus needed to be each day," Swafford said. "This is a great field of teams from all across the country and our guys showed up ready to play and compete. It's a great starting point for our spring season."
UT Martin will take some time off before resuming its spring slate on March 12-14 at the People's Golf Championship in St. Simons Island, Ga.
