MARTIN, Tenn. – Off to a 3-1 start in Ohio Valley Conference play for just the fifth time in school history, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad travels to Morehead State tomorrow for an early season showdown. Tipoff from Ellis T. Johnson Arena in Morehead, Ky. is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.
The Skyhawks (11-4), who also won three of their first four OVC decisions in 2014-15, 2002-03, 2001-02 and 1997-98, currently lead the league in scoring defense (65.4 points per game), opponent field goal percentage (.391), offensive rebounding (13.9 per contest) and rebounding margin (+8.9).
In both of UT Martin's wins last week over Western Illinois (67-60 on Thursday) and Eastern Illinois (65-61 on Saturday), Matas Deniusas knocked down go-ahead buckets with under two minutes to play. On Monday, he was recognized as the OVC Freshman of the Week for the seventh time in nine chances, breaking the school record for most such awards in the process.
Andrija Bukumirović also achieved a bit of history in the Skyhawk victory over Eastern Illinois last Saturday. His seven points and career-highs of 14 rebounds, six blocks, four assists and four steals marked the first time that a NCAA Division I men's basketball player had produced that final stat line, according to StatHead Basketball. It also marked the first six-block performance by any UT Martin player against an OVC squad since at least 2002.
The Eagles (7-8, 3-1 OVC) have won four of their last five outings, including a gritty 73-72 victory at defending OVC Tournament champion SIUE last Saturday. John Carroll (17 points, game-high eight rebounds, three assists, three blocks) and Chase Dawson (17 points) led the charge as Morehead State overcame a 15-point deficit with 5:47 remaining.
In two games against the Skyhawks last season, Anouar Mellouk averaged 10.0 points and 5.5 rebounds while shooting 72.7 percent (8-for-11) from the field.
