CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team won its third consecutive game Tuesday when it topped Southeast Missouri, 67-56, on the road at the Show-Me Center in Cape Girardeau.
The Skyhawks got off to a slow start in the game, going just 1-for-9 from the floor in the opening quarter. However, a 9-for-12 clip at the free throw line helped leave them down by only one, 13-12, at the end of the first.
The second quarter belonged to UT Martin, as it outscored SEMO, 21-7, in the frame, including a 14-2 run in the middle of the quarter, giving them a 13-point lead at halftime, 33-20. In the third, SEMO returned the favor by beginning the quarter on an 11-2 run and outscoring UT Martin, 21-10, nearly erasing its halftime deficit and trailing by just two, 43-41, through three quarters of play.
The Skyhawks pushed their lead out to as much as nine in the fourth quarter, but the Redhawks would not go away and trailed by only three, 59-56, with 2:11 left to play. However, from that point on UT Martin closed out the game on an 8-0 run to secure the 11-point victory.
Despite the slow start from the field, the Skyhawks finished the game at 45.7-percent, going 21-for-46. UT Martin also took advantage of its 29 trips to the free throw line Tuesday by converting on 22 of those attempts.
