MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team allowed a goal in the opening minute of Sunday's match at 14th-ranked Memphis and that proved all the Tigers needed, as they held on for the 1-0 win at the Billy J. Murphy Soccer Complex in Memphis.
"We could have put our heads down after the first goal but we didn't," said head coach Mike Varga after the match. "We settled in and executed our game plan and battled one of the top teams in the country to a 0-0 score for more than 89 minutes. Our team defending was excellent tonight and Jordyn [Riffle] came up big when called on."
Memphis took the opening kickoff down the field where Ellis Kelly and Alex Mackay set up a play that allowed Elise Perron to knock the goal in the back of the net to give her team the 1-0 lead just 12 seconds into the contest. The Skyhawks then clamped down their defense and kept Memphis off the board for the remaining 89 minutes and 48 seconds of the match.
The Tigers placed 17 total shots in the game, with seven going on goal. For the Skyhawks, they had just one shot, that did go on target, from Shayla Addington. Memphis also had more set pieces in the game at 20-6, including outpacing the Skyhawks, 14-0, on corner kicks.
Aside from the early goal, Jordyn Riffle was nearly flawless in the match, shutting out the Tigers for the final 89 minutes and amassing six saves on seven shots on goal.
UT Martin returns to action at Skyhawk Soccer Field Thursday to take on Evansville at 7 p.m.
