MARTIN, Tenn. – The contract of University of Tennessee at Martin head soccer coach Mike Varga has been extended through the 2028 season, the athletic department announced Wednesday.
"Coach Varga has provided strong leadership during his time at UTM, and I am thrilled to extend his contract," said Director of Athletics Kut McGuffin. "He is an experienced coach who works hard every day to put our program in a position to compete for championships."
"The University of Tennessee at Martin and the city of Martin have become home for me and my family," said Varga. "The people that I get to work with daily are second to none. I am honored that Kurt McGuffin and Chancellor Freeman have placed their confidence in me to lead this program, and I am excited for what the future holds. UTM is a special place, and I love coming to work every day. I am also fortunate to have an incredible group of student-athletes that I work with, and I look forward to helping them in any way I can, as they strive for team and individual successes."
Varga is currently in his third season at the helm of the Skyhawks and has won or tied 50.0-percent of matches played. He has also qualified for the OVC tournament in each of his previous two seasons.
He coached Makayla Robinson, Catey Hunt, Izzy Patterson, and Peyton Cook to OVC honors in 2023 and Patterson and Parker Gelinas to all-league honors in 2024. Varga's players have also racked up 11 different OVC weekly honors, including three already this season.
Academically, his players have been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll 82 times, earned 25 OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll accolades and netted a total of seven OVC Medals of Honor.
