9/29/2025 9:26:00 AM | Volleyball
MARTIN, Tenn. – Following a season-opening stretch of 12 road or neutral site matchups to start the 2025 campaign, the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball squad makes its long-awaited home debut tomorrow as the Skyhawks clash against Little Rock at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
UT Martin is 6-4 in home openers in head coach Jaclynn Wilson's tenure and will look for its first Ohio Valley Conference victory of the young season. The Skyhawks and visiting Trojans are the only two OVC teams who have only played one league match so far as this contest will wrap up the season series against Little Rock.
Last season against the Trojans, Kylie Surratt slammed down 23 kills (3.29 per set) on a .232 hitting percentage while Kayla Bryant managed 27 digs (3.86 per set). In the last two seasons against Little Rock, Bryant has compiled 32 kills and 41 digs in four matches to guide UT Martin.
The Skyhawks began their league slate last Wednesday, falling in three sets (9-25, 18-25, 16-25) at defending OVC regular season champion Southeast Missouri. In that match, Bryant (seven kills) and Ava Peters (21 assists) led the UT Martin offense while Surratt and Abby Freund scooped up 12 and 11 digs, respectively.
On the season, Bryant ranks second in the OVC – and just outside the top-25 nationally – with 23 service aces (0.53 per set). The Skyhawk freshman duo of Freund (3.90 digs per set, fifth) and Peters (7.85 assists per set, sixth) each rank in the top-10 in the league in their respective statistical categories.
The Trojans started their OVC calendar at home on Saturday, turning away Southeast Missouri with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory (25-23, 24-26, 12-25, 25-23, 15-11). OVC digs leader Andrea Roman registered 37 scoops while Crismelyi Rodriguez (19 kills, 14 digs), Dariana Valencia (26 assists, 16 digs), Bella Cherry (11 kills, 25 digs) and Kaylee Smith (28 assists, 10 digs) each recorded double-doubles. Vivian Lucumi added a career-best 18 kills on a .417 attack percentage for Little Rock.
