MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team registered its third consecutive under-par round en route to a runner-up finish at the season-opening Grover Page Classic, held at The Links at Audubon.
The Skyhawks compiled a 279 (-5) today to finish with an overall tally of 828 (-24) for the three-round tournament. That number trailed only Central Arkansas (814, -38) in the team standings and was five strokes clear of third-place Tennessee Tech (833, -19). For the tournament, UT Martin ranked second in the field in both eagles (five) and birdies (61).
On the player leaderboard, five Skyhawks shot under-par for the tournament. Luke Caldwell's 206 (-7) led the way with an eighth-place effort out of 95 participants and was followed in the top-20 by Drew Williams (-6, 10th) John-Gregory Wilson (-5, 13th) and Luke Beadles (-4, 20th). Freshman Bryce Harmon also shot a 211 (-2) in his collegiate debut, ranking just outside the top-25 in the standings.
"This was a fantastic way to start the year," UT Martin head coach Austin Swafford said. "Any time you shoot 24-under as a team, you have to be pleased. The golf course played firm and fast, setting up for some good scores. I give credit to our guys for stepping up and taking advantage of that. We still have some areas we have to clean up but all in all, it was a great week. Hopefully we can use this to build some momentum for the rest of the fall."
Caldwell was the top Skyhawk scorer in Round 3 as the senior out of Cookeville, Tenn. carded a 67 (-4) with five birdies. Williams chipped in with a 69 (-2) while Beadles' 70 included a team-best six birdies. Grant Phillips managed four birdies on the way to a 73 (+2) as the final countable score in the lineup while John-Gregory Wilson had two birdies and an eagle on the way to a 75 (+4).
Harmon sank five birdies on the way to a 68 (-3) today to pace UT Martin's four players competing as individuals. Jaden Morrell (two birdies) shot an even-par 71 while Lucas Herring (74, two birdies) and Ian Lambert (76, three birdies) also represented the Skyhawks.
Overall, Caldwell led the entire tournament in par-3 scoring (2.87, -2) while also ranking fifth in fewest bogeys (five) with a team-best 34 pars. Beadles ranked third in the field in birdies (15) and eighth in par-4 scoring (3.85, -4) while Williams was fourth in the event in par-5 scoring (4.33, -8) and tied Caldwell with a team-high 34 pars.
