STILLWATER, Okla. – The University of Tennessee at Martin football team battled for all 60 minutes in its season opener tonight but fell by a 27-7 margin to Big 12 Conference member Oklahoma State in front of 44,809 fans at Boone Pickens Stadium.

The Skyhawk defense overcame a slow start to shine for most of the contest, conceding just six points over a near 49-minute span of clock time. UT Martin tallied nine tackles for loss as a unit, putting together three consecutive three-and-outs in the first half and five punts on the Cowboys' 11 drives.

Jacob Stevenson and Shamari Weir paced the Skyhawk defense with seven tackles apiece while Weir had 1.5 tackles for loss (including a sack). Keyshawn Johnson registered a team-best two tackles for loss (including one sack) in his first start in a UT Martin uniform.

Offensively, John Gentry had 96 all-purpose yards in his Skyhawk debut – compiling team-highs of 51 rushing yards on 16 carries and 45 yards on a pair of receptions, including a touchdown. Jase Bauer made the start at quarterback, passing for 70 yards while adding 51 yards on the ground. Wide receiver Bryce Bailey threw UT Martin's touchdown on a trick play while Deuce Oliver hauled in a team-high three receptions.

Jaren Van Winkle punted eight times for an average of 38.6 yards, placing a pair of punts inside the 20-yard line. Cade Hechter split the uprights on his only PAT attempt of the evening for the Skyhawks.

Oklahoma State was led offensively by Zane Flores (136 passing yards), Kalib Hicks (56 yards on 21 carries) and Gavin Freeman (five receptions for 46 yards and one touchdown). Hauss Hejny started the game at quarterback and had a pair of touchdowns (one passing, one rushing) while Sesi Vailahi added a late rushing touchdown. Defensively, Bryan McCoy, Jr. had a game-high 14 tackles while Wendell Gregory (three sacks), Jaleel Johnson (2.5 tackles for loss) and Kale Smith (interception) also stood out for the Cowboys, who won their 30^th consecutive home opener – the longest such streak in the Football Bowl Subdivision ranks.


"I thought there were spots where we really played hard and there were bright spots on defense that really excite me for the rest of the season," UT Martin head coach Jason Simpson said. "We wanted to slow the game down a little bit. Oklahoma State made some plays outside that flipped the field on us but we moved the ball at times inbetween the 20's – we have to be better in the high red zones. We have a lot of things to improve on but our mentality was right all night."

After Oklahoma State scored touchdowns on its first two drives, the Skyhawks executed a double pass for their first score of the season. Bauer found Bailey behind the line of scrimmage on the left side before Bailey perfectly lobbed a strike to a streaking John Gentry for an over-the-shoulder, one-handed snag. The four-play, 65-yard drive sliced UT Martin's deficit in half at 14-7 with 2:15 remaining in the first quarter.

The Skyhawk defense showed out for the remainder of the first half. UT Martin held the Cowboys to three consecutive three-and-outs, allowing just 15 yards on those nine plays. Oklahoma State scored on a 42-yard field goal with 2:43 to go before halftime to make the score 17-7 at the break.

Receiving the ball first in the second half, the Skyhawks drove down to the Cowboy 33-yard line before punting. UT Martin's defense held Oklahoma State to another field goal – this time from 39 yards out – with a little over five minutes remaining in the third quarter.

The Skyhawks responded with a sustained 12-play drive that lasted into the fourth quarter, ending with a third-down interception inside the Cowboy 10-yard line.

UT Martin's defense forced yet another punt on Oklahoma State's next drive before the Cowboys scored a touchdown on 3^rd-and-goal with 4:36 left to play in the contest, concluding the game's scoring.

The Skyhawks make another trip west for Week 2, traveling to the Lone Star State for a matchup against the UTEP Miners. Kickoff against the Conference USA opponent is set for Saturday, Sept. 6 at 8 p.m. CT.
