MARTIN, Tenn. – On the heels of a thrilling comeback victory in the Ohio Valley Conference Championship first round, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad is set to take on No. 4 seed Little Rock in the tournament quarterfinals on Thursday, March 6. Tipoff time is set for 6 p.m. at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind.
The No. 8 seed Skyhawks (14-18) pieced together an impressive come-from-behind victory last night, digging themselves out of a 13-point deficit to upend Tennessee Tech by a 70-67 margin. UT Martin received all of All-OVC first teamer Tarence Guinyard's game-high 18 points in the second half as the Skyhawks dominated on the glass (outrebounding the Golden Eagles by a 43-31 margin), points in the paint (30 to 14) and second-chance scoring (18 points to six for Tennessee Tech).
This game marks UT Martin's 12th appearance in the OVC Championship quarterfinals round and first time to ever face the Trojans in the postseason. The Skyhawks are 3-3 all-time inside the Ford Center during the league tourney and have now won at least one game in eight of their last 11 appearances in the field.
Little Rock (18-13) claimed both decisions against UT Martin during the regular season, despite leading for 37 minutes of clock time in a slim 57-56 setback in Martin on Jan. 2. In that contest, the Trojans ended on a 10-2 run to erase a seven-point Skyhawk advantage with 1:50 to go. Josué Grullon poured in a game-high 20 points for UT Martin while also tacking on team-highs of 14 points and nine rebounds in the other between these two sides, a 75-57 Trojan win on Feb. 1.
Little Rock earned a first-round bye thanks in large part to a unit that topped the OVC in scoring defense (66.6 points per game), opponent field goal percentage (.390), blocks (5.16 per contest) and steals (9.06 per outing). OVC Defensive Player of the Year Tuongthach Gatkek averaged 14.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.5 steals per game against the Skyhawks in 2024-25 while All-OVC first teamer Johnathan Lawson hit the game-winning jumper with two seconds left on Jan. 2.
