ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The University of Tennessee at Martin saved its best score of the People's Golf Championship for last today as the Skyhawks carded an even-par 284 at the Sea Palms Golf Club.
UT Martin's Round 3 tally was 13 strokes better than its Day 1 score and a four-shot improvement over yesterday's performance. The even-par effort was tied for the second-best Round 3 score in the entire field and was the same score as tournament champion UNC Greensboro, who won the event by 16 strokes. Overall, the Skyhawks finished the stacked 20-team, 120-man field with a final score of 869 (+17), which ranked just outside the top-10 in the standings and ahead of regional rivals Murray State (+19), Belmont (+27) and Tennessee Tech (+43).

Drew Williams sank three birdies on the way to an even-par 71 while Luke Caldwell's 73 (five birdies) barely edged out Jonathan Xoinis (74, two birdies) for the final countable score in the Skyhawk lineup today.
For the tournament, Chumley managed the best score of any UT Martin participant with a 216 (+3). Twerdahl and Williams were one stroke off his pace with a 217 (+4) as those two were followed by Xoinis (220, +7) and Caldwell (224, +11) in the scoring lineup. Ethan Ray, who was competing as an individual, shot a 79 today with one birdie to end his tournament with a 222 (+9).
The Skyhawks finished fourth in the field in par-3 scoring (3.11, +8) – just an average of 0.02 strokes off the best score in the tournament. Twerdahl led the whole event in pars (41) while leading UT Martin in par-3 scoring (3.00, E). The trio of Williams, Chumley and Caldwell shared the team lead with 10 birdies apiece while Williams led the squad in par-4 scoring (4.07, +2) and Chumley paced the Skyhawks in par-5 scoring (4.58, -5).
"We didn't start off well in Round 1, however we needed some adversity as a team to make us together," UT Martin head coach Austin Swafford said. "The guys responded great in Rounds 2 and 3 as we improved each day. We finished today with three rounds of par or better in windy conditions. I'm proud of our response as a team and feel we got better this week."
The Skyhawks' next two tournaments will be played in the state of Tennessee, beginning with the Memphis Intercollegiate on March 31-April 1. The event will take place at Colonial Country Club in Cordova.
