MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team looks to get back in the win column tomorrow against the Western Illinois Fighting Leathernecks at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. Serving as the backend of a doubleheader with the women's squad, tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (9-15, 5-8 Ohio Valley Conference) will aim for a season sweep of Western Illinois as UT Martin gutted out an 85-83 overtime victory in Macomb back on Jan. 9. The Skyhawks led for 34:51 of clock time and used an 11-2 run in overtime to claim the win in a game that featured 10 ties and a dozen lead changes.
Tarence Guinyard (career-highs of 31 points and four steals), Vladimer Salaridze (17 points, 10 rebounds, four steals) and Matija Žužić (16 points, 5-of-7 shooting from three-point range) helped UT Martin to the road triumph against the Fighting Leathernecks.
The Skyhawks are coming off another gut-wrenching setback on Thursday, falling 52-51 to Lindenwood. UT Martin was once again the unfortunate victim of bad luck, holding the visiting Lions to a paltry 27.1 percent shooting (16-of-59) - the program's lowest defensive field goal percentage against a NCAA Division I squad since Dec. 21, 2015 against Alcorn State (25.9 percent, 14-for-54). According to StatHead.com, NCAA Division I teams were 130-0 when holding an opponent to 27.1 percent shooting or lower heading into Thursday.
Guinyard accounted for a team-best 11 points while Lamine Niang (nine points, 11 rebounds, career-high five blocks) and Andrija Bukumirović (eight points, career-best 12 rebounds) narrowly missed double-doubles for the Skyhawks.
Western Illinois (8-16, 2-11 OVC) enters on a nine-game slide after an 87-69 road loss at Tennessee State on Thursday. Trey Deveaux managed game-highs of 18 points and eight rebounds for the Fighting Leathernecks, who shot 52.4 percent (11-of-21) from beyond the three-point arc.
