MARTIN, Tenn. – Winners of three straight decisions, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad faces its first of back-to-back in-state Ohio Valley Conference opponents when Tennessee State visits the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center tomorrow. Tipoff time is set for 7:30 p.m. (following the conclusion of the women's basketball game as the backend of a doubleheader) on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (12-15, 8-8 OVC) are in the midst of their longest winning streak of the 2024-25 campaign, completing a season sweep over all three of the league's Illinois squads over an eight-day span. Over its last three outings, UT Martin has held the opposition to 40.8 percent shooting while outrebounding its competition by a 117-99 margin.
On Saturday at Eastern Illinois, the Skyhawks pulled through for a 72-68 triumph. UT Martin opened up a 20-point advantage late in the first half but faced a six-point deficit with five minutes remaining before a game-changing 14-2 Skyhawk run. Afan Trnka (career-highs of 18 points and nine assists), Vladimer Salaridze (16 points, 12 rebounds) and Tarence Guinyard (13 points) each scored in double figures to help UT Martin successfully cross the finish line.
The Skyhawks are seeking a season split against the Tigers as Tennessee State pulled out an 81-80 overtime win in Nashville on Jan. 21. In a game that featured 14 lead changes and a dozen ties, UT Martin led by four points with under 90 seconds remaining before the Tigers ended the contest on a 6-1 run. Salaridze (18 points, 14 rebounds) and Trnka (15 points) guided the Skyhawks, who forced 25 turnovers - the most for the program in an OVC game since Feb. 10, 2011.
Tennessee State (13-14, 9-7 OVC) has won seven of its last nine outings but is coming off an 84-72 setback at SIUE on Saturday. Playing without leading scorer Brandon Weston (20 points against UT Martin back on Jan. 21) for the third straight game, the Tigers placed five scorers in double figures with former Skyhawk Justus Jackson (team-highs of 15 points and five assists) leading the way.
