Skyhawks And Drew Williams Each In Third Place After Strong Opening Round Of Loyola Intercollegiate

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Freshman Drew Williams highlighted a strong first round for the University of Tennessee at Martin golf team today as the Skyhawks opened the Loyola Intercollegiate with a terrific showing.
A Greensboro, Ga. native, Williams carded a 68 (-4) to rank third out of 116 golfers in the field. Through 18 holes, he ranks in the top-10 in the tournament in par-4 scoring (3.80, seventh), par-5 scoring (4.25, seventh) and birdies (five, ninth).
UT Martin tallied a 282 (-6) today – ranking only behind Richmond (-11) and Middle Tennessee (-8) in the 19-team standings. The Skyhawks minimized any potential mistakes today, ranking second in the field in pars (58), fewest bogeys (13) and fewest double bogeys (two).
Trailing one shot behind of the team lead was Jonathan Xoinis, who shot a 69 (-3) to rank ninth in the player standings. He ranks second in the tournament with a 2.75 par-3 scoring average and tied Williams for ninth in the field with five birdies.
Luke Caldwell shot an even-par 72 today, which included a pair of birdies and the third-most pars in the tournament (14). Jackson Twerdahl's 73 with three birdies was the final countable score for UT Martin today while Ethan Ray (78, two birdies) was the fifth member of the Skyhawk scoring lineup.
John-Gregory Wilson competed as an individual, sinking three birdies on the way to a 75.
UT Martin is back in action at 8:45 a.m. CT tomorrow for Round 2 at the Palm Valley Golf Club as the Skyhawks are paired alongside Richmond, Middle Tennessee and Marshall on Holes No. 1-3. Wilson will tee off on Hole No. 8 alongside fellow individuals from North Dakota State, Toledo and Marshall.
