MARTIN, Tenn. – Fresh off a courageous road victory, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team looks to continue its sound play as of late when it visits the Eastern Illinois Panthers tomorrow. Tipoff time from Groniger Arena in Charleston, Ill. is set for 3:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (11-15, 7-8 Ohio Valley Conference) have completed season sweeps of two OVC rivals in their last two games, managing victories over Western Illinois and SIUE. A swarming defense was UT Martin's calling card in those outings as the Skyhawks have forced 29 combined turnovers in that stretch. On Thursday, UT Martin limited SIUE to only one field goal in a 9:06 span and held the Cougars without a three-point field goal in their first 15 attempts of the second half.
Tarence Guinyard racked up a game-high 23 points against SIUE for his sixth 20-plus point performance of the 2024-25 campaign. Matija Žužić (12), Josué Grullon (11) and Afan Trnka (10) also reached double figures in the scoring column for the Skyhawks, who overcame an 11-point deficit with 18:11 to go to lead by as many as 10 points with 7:41 remaining.
A bit of history occurred the last time that UT Martin and Eastern Illinois squared off as the Skyhawks rallied from 17 points down in the second half before storming back to claim a 68-63 home win. It marked UT Martin's largest comeback victory in regulation since Nov. 17, 2014 - a span of 330 games. Vladimer Salaridze accumulated a game-best 23 points while Guinyard was responsible for 18 points and a team-high eight rebounds to pace the Skyhawks.
The Panthers (8-18, 4-11 OVC) have followed a three-game winning streak with a current three-game slide. Eastern Illinois fell 66-49 to Tennessee State at home on Thursday as Kooper Jacobi's 12 points paced three Panthers in double digit scoring. Artese Stapleton (16 points), Nakyel Shelton (15), Zion Fruster (12) and Jacobi (11 points, 12 rebounds) all had notable contributions against UT Martin back on Jan. 16.
