
Skyhawks Remain Ninth In Latest National Rankings

WACO, Texas – The University of Tennessee at Martin retained its No. 9 ranking in the National Collegiate Equestrian Association top-10 poll today, appearing in its 36th consecutive set of rankings.
The Skyhawks are coming off a split in their first two meets of the spring, defeating Minnesota-Crookston (13-6) before falling to No. 1 Auburn (11-6) over the weekend in Auburn, Ala. Friday's triumph over Minnesota-Crookston helped UT Martin stay atop the Eastern College Athletic Conference standings at 5-0 before the Skyhawks gave the top-ranked team in the country a stern test the following day.
Freshman Payton Lussen dialed up three victories in the first two appearances of her collegiate career, going 2-0 in flat before adding a MOP honor in fences. Mia McAfoos went 2-0 with a MOP in horsemanship while Kate Davis also added a perfect 2-0 mark in reining. Rileigh Weiss additionally went unbeaten (1-0-1) in flat while Bridget Vieau and Lexi Bailey earned MOP accolades in flat and reining, respectively.
All in all, 14 different UT Martin riders combined for 19 head-to-head victories last weekend. That list included six Skyhawks (Gabby Adams, Elizabeth Becker, Lussen, Amelia Turner, Vieau, Weiss) piling up seven wins in flat, four riders in fences (Becker, Lussen, Emerson Maier, Kate Mills), four UT Martin representatives in reining (Bailey, Davis, Elise Mason, Logan Putvinski) and a pair of Skyhawks in horsemanship (McAfoos, Ava Newsom).
Only three spots shifted from last week's top-10 as Auburn kept its No. 1 rank and is followed by No. 2 TCU, No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 Oklahoma State, No. 5 SMU, No. 6 Texas A&M, No. 7 Fresno State, No. 8 South Carolina, No. 9 UT Martin and No. 10 Baylor.
The Skyhawks are off this weekend before returning to action with a pair of home meets. UT Martin will collide against ECAC foe Delaware State on Feb. 21 before hosting No. 5 SMU for Senior Day on Feb. 22.
