MARTIN, Tenn. – For the second straight game, the University of Tennessee at Martin will host a nonconference foe for the first time as the Skyhawks take on the Alabama State Hornets tomorrow at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
These two squads met for the first time last season in Montgomery in a wild 103-93 overtime decision. UT Martin clawed back from a 23-point deficit with seven minutes remaining in regulation to force overtime before Alabama State escaped with the win. Afan Trnka (17 points) and Andrija Bukumirović (game-high 11 rebounds) helped lead the Skyhawks against a Hornets squad who went on to earn the SouthWestern Athletic Conference Tournament championship and win their opening-round game of the NCAA Tournament.
Off to its best eight-game start in the program's NCAA Division I history (since 1992), UT Martin is 6-2 after defeating Charleston Southern by a 73-56 margin on Tuesday. The Skyhawks locked down defensively, holding the Buccaneers to nearly 27 points below their season scoring average thanks in large part to a 34.5 percent (20-for-58) shooting percentage, including a 9-of-38 effort (23.7 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. Four-time Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week Matas Deniusas' career-best 25 points led all scorers while Filip Radaković (career-high 16 points), Bukumirović (10 points, game-high 11 rebounds) and Luca Colceag (10 points, career-best seven rebounds) also guided UT Martin.
This contest will be the first action for Alabama State (3-5) since a narrow 93-87 setback at New Mexico on Nov. 26. Asjon Anderson brought home SWAC Impact Player of the Week accolades after a game-high 30-point performance to pace five Hornets who cracked double figures in the scoring column. That list included 18 points out of Micah Simpson, who pumped in 20 points (including a 6-for-10 performance from three-point land) against the Skyhawks in last season's matchup.
