MARTIN, Tenn. – The middle contest of a three-game homestand for the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad will take place tomorrow against Charleston Southern as part of the annual "Education Day" morning matchup. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m. on ESPN+.
A jam-packed crowd from 18 local elementary, middle and high schools are expected to be in attendance at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center to watch the Skyhawks (5-2) host their first NCAA Division I nonconference opponent since a 105-103 double overtime victory over North Alabama on Nov. 22, 2023.
UT Martin's first leg of its season-long three-game homestand occurred last Tuesday, a 75-50 triumph over Brescia. The Skyhawk frontcourt played a large role in that win as Matas Deniusas (team-best 14 points in 17 minutes), Andrija Bukumirović (13 points, 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season) and Lamine Niang (season-highs of eight points and 11 rebounds in 12 minutes) helped UT Martin outrebound its NAIA opponent by a 61-27 margin.
This marks just the second meeting on the hardwood between the Skyhawks and Buccaneers (5-4) out of the Big South Conference. Charleston Southern claimed the series debut last season by an 83-68 score as Afan Trnka's nine points (on 4-of-6 shooting) paced all current UT Martin players in that contest.
The Buccaneers are coming off a 74-62 setback at South Carolina on Friday in a contest that was a one-possession game (Charleston Southern trailed 30-28) at the halftime break. Two-time Big South Conference Player of the Week Brycen Blaine came off the bench to score a game-high 23 points for the Buccaneers, who outrebounded the host Gamecocks (43-37) and held South Carolina to just 20.8 percent (5-of-24) shooting from three-point land.
Charleston Southern ranks third nationally in treys per game (12.9) while the Skyhawks rank 19th in the country in three-point percentage defense (.264).
