The University of Tennessee at Martin football team returns home for its final homestand beginning with a rivalry matchup against OVC-Big South Football Association foe Tennessee State on Saturday, Nov. 8. Kickoff from Hardy Graham Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m. with the game being streamed exclusively on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (4-5, 4-1 OVC-Big South) return home riding a three-game winning streak and in sole possession of second place in the Association standings. UT Martin sandwiched a dominant performance against Gardner-Webb (37-7) between two nail-biters against Western Illinois (32-31) and Eastern Illinois (27-20) to move just one game out of first place with three games to play.
Most recently the Skyhawks had to scratch and claw against the Panthers before boasting an overtime victory for the program's seventh consecutive win over Eastern Illinois. UT Martin scored the game's tying touchdown with just 46 seconds to play before eventually outmatching EIU in overtime to secure the comeback victory. In the contest, quarterback Jase Bauer was responsible for three touchdowns – with all three coming in the second half or overtime. Meanwhile Keyshawn Johnson once again proved to be a menace for opposing offenses by tallying 2.5 tackles for loss and a strip sack.
Tennessee State (2-7, 0-5 OVC-Big South) is looking for its first win in Association play this season. Under first year head coach Reggie Barlow, the Tigers are averaging just 11.2 points and 265.2 yards of total offense against league members. Last week the Tigers fell at home to visiting Lindenwood by a 35-13 margin while tallying just 168 yards of offense.
Saturday's game marks the Skyhawks first game of the 19th annual Sgt. York Trophy Series which goes to the winner of the season football series between Ohio Valley Conference schools located in the state of Tennessee – including Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and UT Martin. The Skyhawks have claimed the Sgt. York Trophy 11 times in the series existence while boasting a 37-14 record – the best mark of the three schools.
This marks the 35th all-time meeting between the two programs with Tennessee State holding a narrow 18-16 series advantage. The Skyhawks have been impressive as of late however, winning five of the last six meetings – including four in a row. During that stretch, UT Martin has posted an average margin of victory of 13.8 points per game since 2021.
The game will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+ with Davis Gregory (play-by-play), John Hatler (analyst) and Chris Brinkley (analyst) calling the action. Locally fans can tune into the Skyhawk Sports Network with games broadcast on WCMT "Talk and News You Can Use!" and simulcast on 1410 AM, 100.5 FM, 92.7 FM, 96.1 FM, 99.7 FM and 103.3 FM.
