The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team was edged by UTEP Saturday, 64-60, in overtime in El Paso. A late 3-pointer by the Miners in the fourth sent the game to overtime and another late three in overtime sealed the win for UTEP. Kenley McCarn and Zy Thompson led the Skyhawks in the game with 15 points each. McCarn added five rebounds and five assists to her stat line, while Thompson pulled down six rebounds. Sidni Middleton scored a career-best 10 points on the night, to go along with five rebounds, five steals and two assists. On the glass, Brittani Wells led the way with seven rebounds in addition to two points and a game-high six assists, while Norah Clark added nine points.
Kenley McCarn currently leads the Skyhawks with 13.6 points per game, while Zy Thompson follows at 10.2 and Grace Billington at 10.0. On the boards, Brittani Wells leads UT Martin with 4.8, while McCarn leads in assists at 3.4 and Sidni Middleton in steals at 3.7. As a team, the Skyhawks are averaging 59.8 points and 32.8 rebounds per game, while their opponents average 61.8 and 45.4. They are currently shooting 38.0-percent from the field, 31.0-percent from 3-point range and 74.6-percent at the free throw line.
NAIA-member Oakwood is 3-4 on the season, but has won each of its last two games to start their HBCU Athletic Conference schedule at 2-0. The Ambassadors opened HBCUAC play with an 85-58 win at Talladega last Thursday, followed by a 67-56 last Saturday at Voorhees. The trio of Kamaria Murray, Saniya Keys and Trenisha Adams combined for 50 points in the win over Voorhees, scoring 18, 17 and 15, respectively.
Oakwood currently averages 67.9 points per game, while allowing 72.4. The Ambassadors are shooting 39.6-percent from the floor, 31.1-percent from 3-point range and 61.3-percent from the free throw line. On the boards, Oakwood averages 38.3 rebounds per game, while giving up 38.1.
Trenisha Adams currently leads Oakwood in scoring with 14.4 points per game, followed by Saniya Keys at 14.1 and Kamaria Murray at 13.0. On the glass, Keys paces the Ambassadors with 7.6 rebounds per game, while Adams and Murray follow at 6.4 and 6.0, respectively.
The Skyhawks have made a three-point field goal in 518 consecutive games, a streak which dates back to Feb. 3, 2009 against Austin Peay and ranks seventh nationally.
After missing two games due to injury, Middleton returned to the lineup against UTEP and was a major contributor. The freshman had 10 points, five rebounds, five steals and two assists against the Miners. On the season, she is averaging 8.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and a team-best 3.7 steals per game.
Kenley McCarn has scored 10 or more points in each of the Skyhawks' five games this season. She is averaging 13.6 points on the season and has scored 10 or more points in 14 of her last 17 games.
Sidni Middleton currently leads the nation in minutes played per game at 38.0. Brittani Wells in second in the OVC at 34.3, while Kenley McCarn is third at 32.7.
The Skyhawks are currently 68th in the nation and second in the OVC in free throw percentage at 74.6. In addition, their 3-point defense ranks 53rd and second in the OVC at 25.0-percent.
