The Skyhawks are 0-2 after a valiant performance in which they never backed down from the eighth-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols despite a 72-61 loss Sunday in front of a sell-out crowd in the Pat Summitt Heritage Classic. The 11-point deficit was the smallest for the Skyhawks in the past 13 meetings between the two teams. UT Martin led by as many as eight in the second quarter and was tied with the Lady Vols at halftime. Tennessee never led by more than 15 in the game and did not score a field goal over the final five minutes and six seconds of the contest.
Kenley McCarn currently leads the Skyhawks with 15.0 points per game, while Grace Billington is just a shade behind at 14.5. Billington also leads the team in rebounds with 6.0 rebounds per game, followed by Brittani Wells and Zy Thompson at 4.5. As a team, the Skyhawks are averaging 57.5 point and 30.0 rebounds per game, while their opponents average 64.5 and 41.0. They are currently shooting 36.4-percent from the field, 40.7-percent from 3-point range and 80.0-percent at the free throw line.
NAIA member Fisk enters Sunday's matchup at 3-0 on the season and have defeated their opponents by an average of 6.0 points per game. The currently lead the HBCU Athletic Conference with 53.0 rebounds per game, which is the fourth best average in all of the NAIA. Kayla Lee currently leads the Bulldogs in scoring at 26.0 points per game and is followed by Ari Branch at 15.7 and Harmonie Bolton at 10.0. Fisk currently has five players averaging 5.0 rebounds per game led by Kennedi Wagner and Tai Lewis at 7.3 and 6.7, respectively.
Sunday will be the second meeting between the Skyhawks and the Bulldogs with UT Martin leading the series, 1-0. The two teams met for the first time last season in Martin, where the Skyhawks walked away with an 86-38 victory.
Billington came off the bench against No. 8 Tennessee to lead all scorers and rebounders in the game with 20 and eight, respectively. She is currently averaging 14.5 points and a team-high 6.0 rebounds per game. She is shooting 46.7-percent from the floor, 62.5-percent from 3-point range and is near perfect at the free throw line where she is 10-for-11.
Kenley McCarn has started the season on a hot streak, scoring 16 at North Alabama and 14 against Tennessee. She has now scored 10 or more points in 11 of her last 14 games.
The Skyhawks have made a three-point field goal in 515 consecutive games, a streak which dates back to Feb. 3, 2009 against Austin Peay and ranks seventh nationally.
