ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Playing in its third match in the last four days, the University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball team put up a fight tonight but ultimately came up just short, dropping a 3-1 decision (17-25, 25-18, 26-28, 19-25) at Lindenwood.
Double-doubles out of Kayla Bryant (13 kills, 12 digs, match-high four service aces) and Kylie Surratt (11 kills, team-best 14 digs) helped guide the Skyhawks on both ends. Abby Freund (co-team-high 14 digs), Ava Peters (match-best 35 assists, five kills, five digs), Kristin Phillips (season-high four blocks) and Maddy Gladson (season-best nine kills) were additionally responsible for notable performances this evening.
Gladson landed two kills in the first four UT Martin points as the Skyhawks jumped out to an early advantage. Midway through the first set, the Lions went on a 14-4 run until another Gladson kill temporarily cooled the Lindenwood momentum. Phillips tacked on a pair of kills during the latter stages of the stanza but ultimately the Lions got on the scoreboard first. Gladson had four kills on a .444 hitting percentage in the opening set for UT Martin.
The Skyhawks never trailed in the second set, leading by as many as eight. After scoring the first three points of the stanza, Bryant helped extend UT Martin's advantage out to 12-6 with back-to-back service aces. Surratt had three kills from that point forward in the second stanza – including set point – as the Skyhawks cruised to the finish line. Surratt's four kills and four digs were both team-highs and allowed UT Martin to even the match at 1-all.
The third set included 10 scores and nine lead changes. Things started out well for the Skyhawks, who began the set with back-to-back kills from Carly Mueller as part of a 4-0 surge. Lindenwood clawed back to take a one-point advantage but UT Martin scored nine of the next 12 points – capped off with a Surratt service ace that made the score 17-12 in favor of the Skyhawks. The Lions mounted another comeback and actually had set point (24-21) but UT Martin charged forward with four unanswered points to claim set point of its own at 25-24 and 26-25. However, Lindenwood ended the set with three consecutive points. Peters assisted on 10 of the Skyhawks' 14 kills in the third stanza.
The Lions scored five of the first six points in the fourth set. Service aces from Bryant on back-to-back possessions allowed UT Martin to come back and knot the score at 7-7. Lindenwood soon went on a 9-4 run and despite three Bryant kills spread out over the Skyhawks' final six points, UT Martin could not extend the match into the fifth set. Bryant was on fire in the last set, delivering seven kills on a .600 attack percentage, the aforementioned two service aces and six digs in the final stanza alone.
A four-match homestand is on the horizon as the Skyhawks take on Western Illinois during Homecoming week. UT Martin will host its OVC rival on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. and Friday, Oct. 10 at 4 p.m. inside Skyhawk Fieldhouse.
