The University of Tennessee at Martin football team hits the road for an OVC-Big South Football Association matchup when traveling to Gardner-Webb on Saturday, Oct. 18. Kickoff from Spangler Stadium is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (2-5, 2-1 OVC-Big South) load the plane to North Carolina looking for their first road win of the season. UT Martin picked up its second Association win last weekend in dramatic fashion after overcoming an 11-point fourth quarter deficit. The Skyhawks relied on big pass plays and a pair of rushing touchdowns by quarterback Jase Bauer to put the team on top before a blocked field goal by Lebron Edmond in the final seconds secured a 32-31 Homecoming victory over Western Illinois.
Following a pair of strong performances, the Skyhawk tandem of Bauer (Offensive Player of the Week) and Cade Hechter (Special Teams Player of the Week) were recognized with OVC-Big South weekly honors. Bauer tallied three total touchdowns in the victory – including a pair of rushing scores in the fourth quarter – while Hechter was perfect with a pair of field goal attempts (28 and 41 yards) and two PATs to score eight points.
UT Martin enters the weekend leading the country in blocked kicks after swatting away three field goals and two PATs this season. The Skyhawks also rank sixth nationally in completion percentage (69.5 percent) and red zone offense (94.7 percent).
Gardner-Webb (4-2, 2-0 OVC-Big South) returns to Spangler Stadium to host its annual Homecoming contest while sitting atop the Association standings with a 2-0 record. The Runnin' Bulldogs have picked up back-to-back league victories over Charleston Southern (30-27) and Eastern Illinois (21-10). The squad boasts a balanced offense which averages 28.8 points and 450.5 yards per game under second-year head coach Cris Reisert.
Saturday's contest marks the seventh meeting between the two programs with each team winning three games in the series. Since squaring off as Association foes, each team has picked up a home victory, with Gardner-Webb scoring the go-ahead touchdown with 13 seconds to play in 2023 to secure a 38-34 win before UT Martin answered in 2024 by an impressive 35-17 margin.
The game will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+ while locally, fans can tune into the Skyhawk Sports Network to hear Davis Gregory call the action. Games are broadcast on WCMT "Talk and News You Can Use!" with simulcasts on 1410 AM, 100.5 FM, 92.7 FM, 96.1 FM, 99.7 FM and 103.3 FM.
