
Skyhawk Track and Field Set For Start Of 2025 Campaign

MARTIN, Tenn.- The 2025 University of Tennessee at Martin track and field season begins this Saturday, Jan. 11 with the Skyhawks aiming to rewrite the school record books once again.

The Commodore Challenge in Nashville, Tenn. (Jan. 11) will be the first of eight indoor meets for UT Martin with the NCAA Nationals marking the end of the indoor campaign in the middle of March. The outdoor season will see its start at the conclusion of nationals and run up until the middle of June with the national meet in Eugene, Ore.

Along with the Commodore Challenge this weekend, the Skyhawks will be competing in the Redhawks Invite at Southeast Missouri on Saturday, Jan. 11. One week later, UT Martin is back in the Music City for the Vanderbilt Invitational (Jan. 17-18) followed by a trip to the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational (Jan. 31-Feb. 1) in Louisville, Ky. The final two indoor meets commence at the Music City Challenge (Feb. 14-15) in Nashville, Tenn. and then the Redhawks Open (Feb. 21) in Cape Girardeau, Mo. The Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championships head to Indianapolis, Ind. from Feb. 25-26 while the NCAA Nationals are scheduled for March 14-15 in Virginia Beach, Va.

In last year's OVC Indoor Championships, the Skyhawk men totaled 33 points (sixth) and the women snared 29 points (eighth) with a grand total of four school records falling. UT Martin secured two podium finishes with the women's DMR team of Rita Eimer, Lydia Tankersley, Janay Chapman and Maggie Roy taking third place (12:12.32) in the competition. Janay Chapman broke the school record in the 60 meter (7.70) on back-to-back days which gave the Skyhawks four points in the meet while Khalid White, Samir Smith, John Collin Askew and Chadwick Stewart tied the school record in the 4x400 (3:18.91).

The Rhodes Invitational (March 14-15) gets the outdoor season rolling in Memphis, Tenn. and then UT Martin makes the quick trip north to Murray State (March 21-22). The month of March concludes with the Wash U Distance Carnival (March 28-29) and sets the stage for the Joe Walker Invite (Apr. 4-5) in Oxford, Miss. to start the month of April. The regular season portion of the outdoor schedule finishes with the Little Rock Invitational (Apr. 11-12) and the Music City Challenge (May 2-3). The OVC Outdoor Championships are set for May 15-17 at the Edward S. Temple Track at Tennessee State. The track and field season officially comes to a close after the conclusion of the NCAA East Regionals (May 28-31) in Jacksonville, Fla., and the NCAA Nationals (June 11-14) in Eugene, Ore.

Luke Johnson (10,000 meter, third) made his way to the podium for UT Martin. Smith, Stewart, White and Ja'Kobe Ward tied the school record (41.49) for the 4x100 while earning six points and a third place finish. Ja'Derrika Welch-Fields scored five points after her fourth place finish in the 400m hurdles (1:03.53), and the 4x100 team of Kayla Jackson, Alaina Gordon, JayleAna Wyatt and Chapman finished in sixth for three points, posting a time of 47.15 in the 4x100.

Sixth year head coach Jolyta Henderson has brought in a talented group to mesh with the skilled returners for the new year. Welch-Fields and Chapman are back for another season while Roy, Danielle Mudd and Reese Settle are looking to carry over their strong performances from cross country season. White (2023 OVC Outdoor Freshman of the Year) and Stewart (holds the indoor school record in the 60m) are aiming for another big year, and Keagan Enicks (OVC Male Cross Country Freshman of the Year)Â and Johnson (All-OVC second team in cross country) are prepared to compete for the podium in the new campaign.
