
Skyhawks Crank Up A Two-Game Road Trip Tomorrow With A Visit To OVC Rival Western Illinois

MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball program begins a two-game Ohio Valley Conference road swing with a visit to the Western Illinois Fighting Leathernecks. Tipoff on Thursday, Jan. 9 is set for 7:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (6-9) enter this contest with a 2-2 OVC mark with both setbacks coming by one point to defending league champions Morehead State and Little Rock, who shared the regular season crown with UT Martin a season ago. In league play, the Skyhawks rank atop the OVC in scoring defense (59.0 points per game), scoring margin (+8.0) and three-point field goals made (10.0 per contest). Overall, UT Martin ranks eighth nationally in rebounds per game (42.67) and 15th in both defensive rebounding per game (28.87) and three-point attempts per game (30.3).
Last Saturday, the Skyhawks handed Southeast Missouri its first OVC loss via a 66-63 home victory. Tarence Guinyard (14 points) led UT Martin in scoring for the sixth time in the last seven games while Vladimer Salaridze generated 10 points to go along with game-highs of 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals for his fourth double-double of the season. Carlos Cortijo (career-best 13 points) and Andrija Bukumirović (11 points) also reached double figures in the scoring column for the Skyhawks, who held their opponent to under 40 percent shooting for the ninth time in 15 games this season.
Western Illinois tops the OVC in three-point field goal percentage (.407) and free throw percentage (.756) in league play. The Fighting Leathernecks wrapped up a three-game OVC road trip on a high note last Saturday with a 75-67 win over Eastern Illinois. Marko Maletic poured in a game-high 25 points thanks in large part to a 7-of-10 effort from three-point land. Newcomers Maletic (OVC-best 17.9 points per game) and Sean Smith (back-to-back triple-doubles last month) join reigning All-OVC second teamer Ryan Myers (15.2 points per game) as a formidable trio for the Fighting Leathernecks (8-7, 2-2 OVC).
