MARTIN, Tenn. – A nationally televised audience awaits the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball program tomorrow as the Skyhawks take on preseason Ohio Valley Conference favorite Little Rock on ESPNU. Tipoff from the Jack Stephens Center is scheduled for 5 p.m.
UT Martin (9-13, 5-6 OVC) will go for a season split over the Trojans as Little Rock squeaked out a 57-56 road win back on Jan. 2. The Skyhawks led for 36:52 of clock time but the Trojans ended the contest on an 10-2 run, including the go-ahead, eventual game-winning jumper from Johnathan Lawson with two seconds remaining.
Josué Grullon, who accumulated a game-high 20 points against Little Rock earlier this season, leads UT Martin into this matchup after putting on a dazzling offensive display on Thursday. The junior guard erupted for a career-best 31 points at Southeast Missouri while also nabbing a game-high eight rebounds in just 28 minutes of playing time off the bench.
Several Skyhawks rank high up on the conference's statistical leaderboards through 11 games in the OVC standings. Tarence Guinyard's 16.2 points per game scoring average in league play ranks second while Vladimer Salaridze tops the OVC in steals (2.0 per contest) and ranks second in rebounding (8.4 per outing). Grullon's 2.8 three-point field goals made per game (first) and .377 three-point field goal percentage (second) are amongst the conference's best while Matija Žužić has also excelled in OVC play with a league-high .463 three-point field goal percentage and 2.5 three-point field goals made per contest (ranking second).
The Trojans (13-9, 7-4 OVC) are playing their fifth game in the last 10 days as back-to-back losses have followed a five-game winning streak. Little Rock fell by a slim 72-70 margin at home against Tennessee State on Thursday after the Tigers converted a go-ahead three-pointer with under one second left. Despite the loss, Isaiah Lewis tallied a career-best 20 points for the Trojans, who forced 20 turnovers.
