The Skyhawks put up a fight Saturday afternoon at the Elam Center, but ultimately fell to Tennessee Tech, 70-59.
Despite outshooting the Golden Eagles on the game, 44.0 to 40.8, it was the second quarter that was ultimately the undoing of the Skyhawks. In the second, UT Martin went just 1-for-12 from the floor for a total of only five points, while Tennessee Tech capitalized and scored 21 points of its own.
Kenley McCarn and Daejah Richmond led the Skyhawks in scoring in the game with 13, while McCarn also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. Anaya Brown finished the game 10 points and five boards, in addition to six points and seven rebounds from Lexi Rubel.
Since losing to the Skyhawks on Jan. 4, Southeast Missouri has hit a seven-game skid and are now 4-15 on the year and 2-8 in OVC play. Zoe Best currently leads SEMO in scoring at 14.7 points per game, while Lexi McCully follows at 9.3. Best also leads the Redhawks on the glass with 4.8 rebounds per game, with Ainaya Williams following at 4.3.
UT Martin currently leads the all-time series with Southeast Missouri, 48-33, while the series in Cape Girardeau is tied at 20 games each. The Skyhawks have won eight of their 10 against the Redhawks and head coach Kevin McMillan is an impressive 29-4 all-time against SEMO.
Anaya Brown got oh-so close to becoming the 18th 1,000-point scorer in program history Saturday, when she scored 10 against Tennessee State. Brown now has 997 career points needing just three more points to join Skyhawk women's basketball's most exclusive club.
Despite recent struggles, the Skyhawks are winning the battle in the pain in OVC play, most recently outscoring Tennessee Tech there, 28-18. The Skyhawks have outscored their opponents in the paint in seven of 10 league games and tied their opponent in one. Through 10 conference games, UT Martin is outscoring their opponents in the paint on average, 31.0 to 26.2, a margin of 4.8 points per game.
With four made 3-pointers against Tennessee Tech, UT Martin has now made at least one 3-pointer in 502 consecutive games. The current streak dates back to Feb. 3, 2009, against Austin Peay and currently, ranks seventh nationally.
With five rebounds against Tennessee Tech, Anaya Brown remains 12th on UT Martin's career rebounding list with 563. Brown's next targets on the list are Larissa Maciarz at 11th with 600 and current UT Martin associate head coach Jasmine Newsome at 10th with 604.
