MARTIN, Tenn. – The 62nd all-time meeting between the University of Tennessee at Martin and Tennessee Tech men's basketball programs will take place tomorrow inside the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center as the two squads will tip off at 3:30 p.m. (following the conclusion of the women's basketball game as part of a doubleheader) on ESPN+.
These two in-state rivals are the two best three-point shooting squads in the Ohio Valley Conference as they both enter this outing with an average of 9.8 trifectas per contest. The Skyhawks (9-11, 5-4 OVC) have won each of the last three regular season meetings against the Golden Eagles by an average of 9.3 points per game.
UT Martin last played on Tuesday, falling by a narrow 81-80 margin in overtime at Tennessee State. The game marked the fourth OVC loss by one point apiece as all four results came down to an opponents' go-ahead bucket with 15 seconds or less remaining. It also was the fourth overtime game of the season (all coming since Dec. 11) for the Skyhawks, which are the program's second-most overtime decisions in a single season behind the 1998-99 squad (six).
Vladimer Salaridze (18 points, career-best 14 rebounds) led UT Martin in scoring for the third straight outing against the Tigers while Afan Trnka (15 points), Matija Žužić (12) and Josué Grullon (11) also scored in double figures. Despite the setback, the swarming Skyhawk defense forced Tennessee State into 25 turnovers - the most for any UT Martin NCAA Division I opponent since Jacksonville State committed 26 miscues on Feb. 10, 2011.
In addition to three-pointers made, Tennessee Tech (9-11, 4-5 OVC) paces the OVC with 15.90 assists per outing and a 1.36 assist-to-turnover ratio. The Golden Eagles dropped a 89-77 decision last night at Tennessee State after holding a seven-point halftime advantage. Kyle Layton (20 points) and OVC assists leader Jaylon Johnson (11 points, seven rebounds, seven assists) stood out for Tennessee Tech, who has lost four straight contests in the absence of leading scorer Rodney Johnson, Jr. and his 14.6 points per game scoring average.
