MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team returns home for three of the next four outings, starting with a matchup against Eastern Illinois tomorrow. The game will follow the women's contest as the backend of a doubleheader, tipping off at approximately 7:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (7-10, 3-3 Ohio Valley Conference) will look to replicate their recent home success as UT Martin is 30-5 inside the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center since the start of the 2022-23 campaign. The Skyhawks are 18-11 all-time against the Panthers at home.
UT Martin enters this contest with all three OVC losses coming by a single point off go-ahead buckets scored in the final 15 seconds. Despite the tough luck, the Skyhawks top the league in scoring margin (+5.5), three-point field goals made (11.0 per game), three-point field goal percentage (.377), offensive rebounding (13.5 per outing) and steals (8.83 per contest) in OVC play.
UT Martin is coming off a narrow 82-81 setback at Lindenwood last Saturday. The Skyhawks led for 29:42 of clock time but the Lions made their first two treys of the second half inside the last 14 seconds - including the eventual game-winner with 5.5 seconds remaining. Tarence Guinyard (18 points) led UT Martin in scoring for the eighth time in the last nine contests while Vladimer Salaridze (14 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, two steals) collected his OVC-best sixth double-double. Josué Grullon (14 points), Afan Trnka (14) and Matija Žužić (10) also provided double-digit scoring performances for the Skyhawks.
All five of Eastern Illinois' OVC decisions have been decided by eight points or less, including a 69-64 home loss against Tennessee Tech in its last action on Thursday. Nakyel Shelton went off for 20 points, 13 rebounds, two assists and two steals but the Panthers (5-11, 1-4 OVC) could not protect a 37-28 halftime advantage.
Shelton ranks third in the OVC in scoring at 17.2 points per game while Kooper Jacobi (OVC-high 9.1 rebounds per game) and Zion Fruster (18.0 points per game in OVC play) have also stood out for Eastern Illinois.
