An early test is on the books for the University of Tennessee at Martin football program with a Week 2 meeting against long-time conference rival Southeast Missouri for an important Big South-OVC Football Association matchup on Saturday, Sept. 7. Kickoff from newly renovated Houck Stadium is slated for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
This marks the earliest league contest on the schedule for the Skyhawks since opening the season against former conference rival Jacksonville State during the 2011 campaign. These two teams did meet 33 years ago on the same date with UT Martin picking up a 36-29 home victory over Southeast Missouri on Sept. 7, 1991.
UT Martin (0-1, 0-0 Big South-OVC) opened the season on the road last weekend with a matchup against Big 12 foe and No. 17 ranked Kansas State. The Skyhawks won the turnover battle by forcing a fumble and an interception, but could not pull off the upset, falling to the Wildcats 41-6. Specialist Jaren Van Winkle was strong in his debut, making a pair of field goal attempts to score all six points for the team.
The Skyhawks enter the 2024 campaign as the preseason favorite to win the Big South-OVC Football Association title. UT Martin has won at least a share of three consecutive league championships and garnered 61 total points and five first place votes to sit atop the association's preseason poll. Southeast Missouri garnered 51 total points and two first place selections to rank third in the poll. Overall, either the Skyhawks or Redhawks have won four of the last five league titles dating back to the 2019 campaign.
Southeast Missouri (1-1, 0-0 Big South-OVC) enters the contest with two games under its belt after winning a Week 0 matchup against North Alabama (37-15) before falling on the road against FBS foe New Mexico State (23-16). The Redhawks are coached by Tom Matukewicz who boasts a 55-60 overall record in 11 seasons with SEMO. The squad returns 11 starters – including six on offense and five on defense – while boasting three returning all-conference performers in linebacker Bryce Norman, offensive center Zack Gieg and kicker DC Pippin.
Saturday's game marks the 40th meeting between the two programs with UT Martin holding a narrow 20-19 lead over Southeast Missouri in the all-time series dating back to 1966. The Skyhawks have won two of the last three games against the Redhawks, while boasting a 9-10 record at Houck Field.
The game will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+ while locally fans can tune into the Skyhawk Sports Network to hear Davis Gregory (play-by-play) and Chuck Hammer (analyst) call the action.
