
Skyhawk Cross Country To Open 2024 Season This Weekend

MARTIN, Tenn.- A year after producing three all-conference performers, the University of Tennessee at Martin cross country team is looking to improve on its prior campaign. The Skyhawks begin their season at the Memphis Twilight XC Classic on Saturday, Aug. 31.

In total, 15 returners make their way back to campus with 10 coming back on the men's side and five for the women's team. The men's team finished fifth during the Ohio Valley Conference Cross Country Championship while the women's team placed seventh at the event held at the Eagle Trace Golf Course in Morehead, Ky.

The women's side brings back Maggie Roy, Rita Eimer, Gabby Brown, Kaitlyn Loyet and Violet Francisco for third-year head coach Jolyta Henderson.

On the season, the women's team had its highest finish of the season at the 6k for the OVC Championship. The PR's of the returners in the 6k are as listed: Roy (22:25.3); Eimer (23:11.1); Brown (23:24.4); Loyet (26:40.6) and Francisco (24:13.3).

The newcomers on this year's team feature sophomore transfer Lauren Sedberry and true freshmen Danielle Mudd, Eliana Oquendo and Reese Settle.

The men's team hopes to receive major performances from All-OVC first teamer Sam Shuman and All-OVC second teamer Luke Johnson this fall. The team finished with top-five finishes at the City Auto Memphis Twilight Classic, Angel Mounds Invitational and the OVC Championship a year ago.

Johnson and Shuman join teammates Colton King, Ethan Knight, Maluke Cluver, Brady Millikin, Angus Monro, Christian Patterson and Ben Ruscoe as returners for the 2024 season.

Their PR's in the 8k are as listed: Shuman (23:54.8), Johnson (24:17.4), King (26:01.8), Knight (24:58.6), Millikin (25:14.2), Monro (25:03.5), Patterson (25:37.9) and Ruscoe (25:47.1). Cluver had a PR in the four-mile of 25:54.1 during the City Auto Memphis Twilight XC Classic while David Stukey is running cross country for the first time after recording three PR's in the track and field season.

The newcomers are freshmen Tristen Bough, Ethan Brinkley, Ridge Bruce, Keagan Enicks and Tobias Tanui.

Following the Memphis Twilight XC Classic on Aug. 31, UT Martin will host the OVC Preview in Union City, Tenn. (Sept. 14). The Skyhawks hit the road for the Gans Creek Classic (Sept. 27) and the Angel Mounds Invitational (Oct. 18) before returning to Union City for the OVC Championships (Nov. 1). The season will conclude at the NCAA South Regionals in Tallahassee, Fla. on Nov. 15.
