The University of Tennessee at Martin football team will make its season debut this weekend when traveling to Big 12 Conference preseason favorite Kansas State on Saturday, Aug. 31. Kickoff from Bill Snyder Family Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks enter the season coming off three-consecutive conference championships – including back-to-back Ohio Valley Conference titles in 2021 and 2022 before claiming the inaugural Big South-OVC Football Association title in 2023. UT Martin has won 15 of its last 17 conference games while earning the league's automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs in 2021.
UT Martin opens its 95th season of football and 33rd as a Division I program in 2024. The Skyhawks are 40-51-2 in season openers in the program's history while playing FBS programs 10 times during the Jason Simpson Era.
Saturday's contest marks the 29th matchup against a FBS program for the Skyhawks with the team's last win coming in 2012 against Memphis. The game does mark the first matchup for the program against a member of the Big 12 Conference while kickstarting a four-year run against the league.
Entering his 19th season on the sidelines, Skyhawk head coach Jason Simpson possesses an 115-87 career record. The two-time OVC Coach of the Year ranks fourth in league history in career victories while winning conference titles in 2006, 2021, 2022 and 2023.
K-State is coming off a 9-4 campaign in 2023 while boasting a 6-3 record in Big 12 play. The Wildcats return eight starters on defense – including five of its top six tacklers – along with junior running back DJ Giddens who capped off the season with four consecutive 100-yard rushing performances and 1,226 yards last season. Head coach Chris Klieman enters his sixth season with K-State and boasts an 111-37 career record.
Saturday's meeting marks the first matchup between the two programs in series history.
The game will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+ with Mark Neely (play-by-play) and Ahman Green (analyst) calling the action. Locally, fans can tune into the Skyhawk Sports Network to hear Davis Gregory (play-by-play) and Chuck Hammer (analyst) call the action. Games are broadcast on WCMT "Talk and News You Can Use!" with simulcasts on 1410 AM, 100.5 FM, 92.7 FM, 96.1 FM, 99.7 FM and 103.3 FM.
