3/6/2024 10:54:00 AM | Women's Basketball
The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team enters the 2024 Ohio Valley Conference Women's Basketball Championship Presented by United Fidelity Bank as the No. 3 seed and will open the tournament with a quarterfinal matchup against No. 6 seeded Tennessee Tech on Thursday, March 7. Tipoff from the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind. is slated for 3:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
UT Martin joins the tournament field as the No. 3 seed for just the second time in program history. The squad is no stranger to the eight-team field however, as the Skyhawks have clinched one of the top-four seeds in the OVC Basketball Championship in 13 of the 15 seasons under the direction of head coach Kevin McMillan while making the four-day event every season.
The Skyhawks finished the regular season with a 14-15 overall record while tying for second place in the league standings with an 11-7 record. UT Martin has relied heavily on its defense during OVC play and enter the tournament ranked second in scoring margin (+5.4) and opponent scoring (58.6 ppg).
Two players earned All-OVC first team honors with freshman guard Kenley McCarn and sophomore forward Anaya Brown joining the decorated 10-player list. McCarn leads the team with 16.3 points per game while sitting amongst league leaders in minutes played (first), free throw percentage (second), scoring (third) and field goal percentage (fifth). Meanwhile, Brown has been a double-double machine by averaging 16.8 points and 9.4 rebounds in league play while also sitting among OVC leaders in blocks (second), field goal percentage (second), rebounding (third) and scoring (fifth).
Since McMillan took over the program, UT Martin has won 10 OVC championships – including six regular and four tournament crowns. His 10 titles lead all active OVC coaches – men or women – by seven.
Tennessee Tech (16-14) picked up a win in the first round of the OVC Basketball Championship over No. 7 seed Western Illinois by a 78-69 margin. The Golden Eagles had four players score in double figures, led by the play of Maaliyah Owens with 23 points and seven rebounds in the win.
UT Martin swept the regular season series over Tennessee Tech, picking up a win in late December on the road before posting a 67-37 victory in the Elam Center last Thursday.
The game will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+ while local listeners can tune into the Skyhawk Sports Network to hear Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Davis Gregory (analyst) call the action live from courtside. Games are broadcast on WCMT "Talk and News You Can Use!" with simulcasts on 1410 AM, 100.5 FM, 92.7 FM, 96.1 FM, 99.7 FM and 103.3 FM.
