MARTIN, Tenn. – A share of the 2023-24 Ohio Valley Conference men's basketball regular season championship is within reach for the University of Tennessee at Martin, who hosts in-state foe Tennessee State on Saturday, March 2 at 3:30 p.m. in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center. Fans are invited to "White Out" the Elam Center as the game also serves as Senior Day, "We Back Pat" Day and Basketball/Cheer Alumni Reunion Day.
The Skyhawks (20-10, 13-4 OVC) enter the regular season finale tied with Morehead State and Little Rock atop the league standings. A victory against the Tigers would clinch the program's second OVC regular season championship and an automatic double bye into the semifinals of next week's OVC Tournament.
This contest will serve as Senior Day as KK Curry, Issa Muhammad and Desmond Williams will be recognized in pregame for their career contributions. Those three have registered 1,453 points, 801 rebounds and 194 assists over six combined seasons in a UT Martin uniform.
The Skyhawks are coming off their sixth consecutive win - an 80-69 triumph over Tennessee Tech on Thursday. Jordan Sears piled up 20 of his game-high 28 points in the second half while Williams (16 points), Jacob Crews (13) and Muhammad (11 points, 15 rebounds) also scored in double figures. UT Martin drained 14 three-pointers and had just four turnovers - its lowest amount since committing three against Presbyterian on Dec. 20, 2014 (a span of 302 games).
Tennessee State (17-13, 10-7 OVC) was the Skyhawks' first OVC opponent of the season back on Dec. 28, a 91-75 UT Martin triumph. Muhammad led the way with a career-best 23 points and 10 rebounds as one of his nine double-doubles this season.
The Tigers fell 85-60 at Little Rock on Thursday as EJ Bellinger and Kinyon Hodges scored 15 and 12 points, respectively.
Five Tennessee State players reached double-digits in the points column against the Skyhawks on Dec. 28, including Michael Shanks (20), Bellinger (11 plus 12 rebounds), Jason Jitoboh (11), Christian Brown (10) and Jaylen Jones (10).
