UT MARTIN WOMEN’S HOOPS CLOSES OUT ROAD TRIP WITH MATCHUP AT WESTERN ILLINOIS
2/9/2024 10:35:00 AM | Women's Basketball
The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team looks to put an exclamation point on an impressive but grueling four-game road trip with a matchup against Ohio Valley Conference foe Western Illinois on Saturday, Feb. 10. Tipoff from Western Hall is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (10-12, 7-4 OVC) close out their longest road trip of the season with their third trip to the state of Illinois. UT Martin has responded nicely on the road, picking up wins at Eastern Illinois (80-65), SIUE (75-46) and Little Rock (64-58) while outscoring opponents by 16.7 points per game and shooting 50.3 percent from the field.
A win would secure a road sweep of the state of Illinois after also sweeping the team's road trip against OVC schools in Tennessee back in December. UT Martin went on the road and defeated Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech in back-to-back games on the opening weekend of league play while a win against Western Illinois would parlay a three-game sweep in the Land of Lincoln after knocking off Eastern Illinois and SIUE last week.
This matchup features some of the league's best freshmen performers as UT Martin's Kenley McCarn (16.5 ppg, 4.7 rpg) and Norah Clark (10.4 ppg, 3.5 rpg) square off against Western Illinois's Raegan McCowan (18.5 ppg, 8.3 rpg). While Clark and McCowan shared both OVC Player and Freshman of the Week for the past weekend, the trio has combined to win every OVC Freshman of the Week honor this season.
Western Illinois (15-7, 6-5 OVC) had a three-game winning streak come to a halt after falling at home to Little Rock on Thursday night by a final margin of 50-41. The Leathernecks rank as one of the league's top offenses, averaging 74.1 points per game while boasting an average margin of victory of 10.4 points. McCowan has been a force for WIU, ranking first in the league in scoring (18.5 ppg) and fourth in rebounding (8.3 rpg) while recording seven double-doubles in her debut season.
Saturday's contest marks just the fourth meeting between the two schools in program history. UT Martin holds a perfect 3-0 advantage in the all-time series – including a 68-49 victory in the Elam Center back in January.
The game will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+ while local listeners can tune into the Skyhawk Sports Network to hear Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Davis Gregory (analyst) call the action live from courtside. Games are broadcast on WCMT "Talk and News You Can Use!" with simulcasts on 1410 AM, 100.5 FM, 92.7 FM, 96.1 FM, 99.7 FM and 103.3 FM.
